Im still working with the cherry, and thought Id give an update (but no pics this time).
Im in the process of cutting the solid cherry to widths needed, and have also been playing with the cherry plywood with the stain. I want to make sure everything is going to stain out the same, and will be nice and even when Im done. I also am going to be milling out the fluted trim. Ill be posting some photos of this process when I get to that point.
Ill be giving another update shortly, but everything is going as planned.

This week we made a last minute plan to go to Disneyland on Friday. We wanted to go before school got out in hopes that it wouldnt be as busy. Turned out that it was grad night, so we were out of luck but we still had a great time!


Saturday we stopped at Ikea (of course). I wasnt really planning on getting anything, but then I remembered a few things that would be good for projects (always happens :)
Sunday we worked on our latest project that I briefly talked about last week. We started cutting driftwood last week and finished this weekend. It was A LOT of cutting!! We are done with the hard part, so hopefully we will have lots of progress/finished pictures a little later this week!

My face vise stunk.
I made it out of scrap wood left over from the benchtop. The wood itself is soft, I drilled the holes sloppily, and its a little thin. All of these factors led to a really flexy vise with a lot of slop.

Along with the walnut and maple that I used for the bookcase, I also picked up a grab bag of scrap cutoffs from Peachtree Lumber. One of the real gems in it was this:
Its a 2" thick piece of what Im quite sure is tulip poplar. It was really cupped, but I handplaned it down nice and flat. Poplar is a pretty soft wood which should make it nice for holding smaller, delicate pieces. I ripped it down the middle into two pieces.

The sloppy drilling on the original vise jaw was the result of the vise not coming with a template to help layout exactly where the holes go. I sort of eyeballed it. I thought of a better solution this time:
I took the vise apart and used the jaw itself as the template. The metal piece at the bottom of the picture is where all the rods end, so I just used that to space all my holes perfectly.

Now thats a vise!

I like it. It works better too.

Im probably going to do a little surgery on the actual bench itself to make it even a little more rigid, but that will be another day.

In the last post I mentioned my affinity for Bosch tools. Well, apparently someone at Bosch is paying attention because immediately a free Bosch plunge-cut blade for my oscillating tool showed up in the mail. Im not kidding.
